I thought this was a success! Everyone made a segment of the artwork then worked collaborative to decide how the puzzle pieces all came together. Our piece of the puzzle was in black and white so we had liberty to use our own ideas for color and dimensions. It turned out awesome!! It would be a great project for an elementary school class. The artist who created this piece was Henri Matisse who was a French artist known for using nontraditional use of color and the way he manipulated and exaggerated form. His work showed a lot of emotion. This artwork is titled "Codomas" and was part of the portfolio Jazz 1947. The artist used colored stencil printed from multiple papercut stencils and lithograph. I think this piece is interesting and important. Henri Matisse was in poor health and no longer painting when he made this piece. He made it by cutting out brightly colored shapes and then assembling them. He was able to still achieve his style of modern manipulation of color and form. I enjoyed working in a collaborative group. I think it is interesting to see all the different perspectives that each artist added to their own representation of the segment of Matisse's artwork they depicted. Even with our own decision on color and size it all came together and we were able to get the feeling of a Matisse work of art. I think this lesson would work great for grades 2-8. The lower grade possible give them puzzle pieces of artwork to put together to create the finished piece of work or a simpler design.
These are the postcards that our group selected to represent the Elements of Art. Starting at the top left corner and then working down and back to the top then back down each column. The first postcard best depicts the dominant element of line because of the interesting way the lines carve a path in the piece of work. In the next postcard just below the previous piece the strongest element is shape. This is displayed through the use of many organic forms and shapes represented in a variety of dark, light, and primary colors. Color is the dominant feature in the third piece with bold colors like green, blue, and red presented in square and rectangular shapes that either next to each other or overlapping. Top middle is the example of value. This postcard is a great example of value because it shows a drastic change in tones from extreme dark then transitioning to lighter tones showing how the light source shines on one side of the person's face. In the postcard just below form is the dominant feature. The eye is drawn to the Indian figure that encompasses most of the image on the postcard. The top third column displays the dominant feature texture through the rough swirling surface the ocean. The last picture depicts space through the use of hazy and smaller images toward the back of the picture. The first postcard top left of the grid best depicts the principle of art balance. In this piece the elements of art like line and shape work together to form a balanced piece of work. Below the postcard shows the dominant feature of contrast with the extreme dark side contrasted with the white trees and background and again contrast against the darker tones of the deer. Emphasis is the dominant principle expressed in piece because the eye peeking through the newspaper contrast each other. The texture and shapes of the text on the newspaper contrast drastically with the image of a face with an eye staring through the hole in the paper. Top of the next column depicts movement through the way the artist uses fish ripples in the water made by the interactions of the fish. Just below that piece the dominant principle is pattern displayed through the repeated decorative well-balanced geometric shapes. Below and to the left of the is a example of rhythm. The rhythm is expressed through the repeated squares containing several different shapes in various color contrast, but working together to achieve rhythm. Finally, unity is the dominant principle in the postcard with many different images both large and small but all come together to make a unified pleasing piece of artwork.
